Next fall, the iPhone 17 series will launch, with major overhauls across the range. A recent report about the super-slim model, nicknamed the iPhone 17 Air, had lots of details about a phone that will look different from any previous iPhone. But there were also nuggets about how the rest of the series will be different.

A leaker with a decent track record is now disputing this, however, saying that Apple will “of course” stick to titanium for next year’s premium models – though the dispute could all be down to ambiguous terminology.
Today a leakster from Weibo contradicts that entire rumor, claiming that going back not even to stainless steel but to aluminum for the Pro models would represent too big of a blow to Apple's reputation, considering how much it's tried to convince us that both stainless steel and titanium are way better than aluminum.

The report says that the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max will, “all switch to aluminum frames from stainless steel and titanium.”
I don’t quite buy this, not least because there are no stainless steel iPhones in the current range.
And that's all true of course. A not huge but definitely not tiny part of Apple's introductions for its new Pros over the past few years have been dedicated to materials, and how first stainless steel and then titanium make them oh-so-premium feeling. So there's that.
But Apple has also been a very profit-driven company recently, so we wouldn't be that surprised to see it simply going back to aluminum which is cheaper than both stainless steel and titanium in order to make a few more bucks per phone, and obviously pretend like it never said anything about the other two materials' superiority.
All of which is also surprising because it’s hard to see how you can achieve the seamlessness Apple likes so much with two different materials in play.
