Apple released the second iOS 18.2 release candidate to developers and beta testers on Dec. 9. The tech giant released the RC more than a month after the company released iOS 18.1 to the general public. While iOS 18.1 brought a few new features and fixes to all iPhones, and a few Apple Intelligence features to others, the RC brings more AI features to some developers and beta testers. There are also a few new features and upgrades in the RC that aren't a part of Apple Intelligence, so everyone can access them.
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman had previously said that this year’s iOS update was huge. “I’m told that the new operating system is seen within the company as one of the biggest iOS updates—if not the biggest—in the company’s history,” he reported. And now there are more reports of exactly when we should expect to see this release, with increasing numbers of publications insisting the release will be on Monday, Dec. 9. Spoiler: I think that’s wrong.

Don’t worry, it’s not that much longer to wait, but you’ll need to practise patience just a little longer. London newspaper The Standard initially insisted it would be Dec. 9, though is edging away from that with a revised headline and a note that it could be “as soon as today.” And respected tech site T3 claims that a note from network EE has given the game away and that Dec. 9 is the day. You can read more about the EE mystery below.
The Find My app can be used to locate things like your AirPods and MacBook, and with the iOS 18.2 RC, Apple makes it easy for everyone to get help finding lost items. In the RC, if you go into Find My > Items and tap one of your items, you have two new options: Share Item Location and Show Contact Info.
The Mail app on every
iPhone also gets an upgrade in the iOS 18.2 RC. Apple announced in September that Mail would soon be able to sort emails to multiple categories to keep your important emails in one place and ads or promotions in another, like Gmail and Outlook do. The new layout keeps things mostly tidy, but Mail doesn't always get it right. For example, I found an email for digital tickets I previously ordered in the Promotions category rather than the Primary category.
Although it could be later, I believe it will be in the coming days. Apple likes a Monday or Tuesday release. This is a very big release so I think Monday, Dec. 9 may be too early. Tuesday, Dec. 10 or Wednesday, Dec. 11 seem the hot favorites to me. Wednesday is my best guess. And despite the EE information mentioned above, I still think it’ll be one of those two, most likely Dec. 11.
