Plans have been unveiled to turn the former fabric capital of the city, Sham Shui Po, into a fashion and design center, starting off with a five-story building on Tung Chau Street.

The 3,600 square-meter centre will be developed under the Urban Renewal Authority and operated by the Hong Kong Design Centre.

Workshops, incubation pods, co-working spaces and libraries will all be available at the new center to help nurture start-ups and Hong Kong designers of the future. The center is to be completed by 2023.

Commerce and Economic Development Secretary Edward Yau said it was part of a larger blueprint to revive the once thriving area, which has now fallen behind to become the city's poorest district.

There are hundreds of fabric and fashion accessory shops located in the area still, drawing fashion and design enthusiasts.

Yau said the new centre will also allow designers across different industries to share their ideas and experiences with one another. And selected young designers will have a chance to refine their trade with guidance offered at the center.

But while the government's planning to revitalize the traditional garment and fabric retail district by blending it with the new fashion hub, vendors in the district are far from happy with developments in the area.

Some who've been operating for years at the Yen Chow Street Fabric Market face relocation to make way for a housing project and Yau conceded that the new hub won't be for them. But he said officials are still trying to strike a deal with the vendors over their relocation to a nearby temporary market.Read more at:prom dresses online | prom dress shops
