Sarah Jessica Parker Narrates the History of 2010s Fashion in Vogue
As Vogue celebrates its 125th year, we look back at the history of fashion, and the magazine, in a series of “five points” videos by decade, narrated by the stylish Sarah Jessica Parker.
Today, fashion is defined by a sense of individuality, rhythm, and speed. It is informed by technology and powered by style.
THE CULT OF PERSONALITY
When Vogue was founded as a journal of fashion and society in 1892, the “smart” world was one where wealth—and Mrs. Astor—held sway, and lineage trumped accomplishment. Today, the opposite is true. These days, the women and men who top Vogue’s to-know lists are stylish representatives of a diverse meritocracy. It doesn’t matter if they would have made the old Social Register or not; they have resonance on social media.
CLEAN LIVING
Though this decade is far from over, it will be remembered, in part, for its abiding ’90s nostalgia, which has renewed interest in the minimalism championed by Helmut Lang, Jil Sander, Martin Margiela, and Calvin Klein back in the day. It’s a look that’s been reimagined for now with a luxurious, street-smart swagger by the likes of Phoebe Philo at Céline and Raf Simons.
SLAM DUNK
By the time big trends are given broad, public recognition, they are usually over, but that’s not the case with athleisure. Added to the dictionary in 2016, athleisure continues to be a trend with serious legs . . . or rather, leggings. (Sales of yoga pants surpassed those of denim in the 2010s.) While some prefer the term “athluxury,” the combination of comfort and performance—with the added bonus of stripey throwback references to Run-D.M.C—is a winning one.
