As a public figure who embodied glamour, intrigue, duty and mystery, Diana, Princess of Wales's wardrobe was one of her most powerful means of communication throughout her 16 years in the public eye.
Although she died when she was just 36, the world had seen Diana transform from a shy, demure teenager to a sophisticated international celebrity. The fact that the Princess owned just a handful of her own clothes when she was flatsharing in London working as a nursery school teacher seems baffling when you think that one of the projects which occupied most of her time in what would turn out to be the final year of her life was deciding which of the countless couture gowns overspilling from her wardrobe room at Kensington Palace to sell for a charity auction at Christie's. "It's interesting to see how her style, thank god, changed," quipped Joan Rivers to the New York Times as she toured the Christie's exhibition of pieces to be sold. In the end, it was the velvet off-shoulder number by Victor Edelstein that Diana wore to dance with John Travolta at the White House in 1985 which fetched the most, $325,000, proving how an outfit can become so symbolic and evocative of the moment for which it is worn. It's little wonder then that Diana came to epitomise late 20th century fashion- from polka dots and ruffled blouses to LBDs and power tailoring- her style choices came to speak of different chapters in both her personal life and the evolution of fashion.
The bling, jewel colours and exaggerated silhouettes of the 80s suited the striking, regal image she was projecting as one of the most senior member of the royal family while the pared-back, simple aesthetic of the 90s was ideal for her new phase where she could blend the businesslike and the daringly independent- think shorter lengths and casually elegant jeans and tailoring.
"She was an expert in the language of clothes," Eleri Lynn, curator of 'Diana: Her Fashion Story' told The Telegraph earlier this year. Anna Harvey, the former deputy editor of Vogue and Diana's stylist, confirms that the Princess was acutely aware of the messages her style would project. "She was always very thoughtful about how her clothes would be interpreted, it was something that really mattered to her."
