As we all know, fashion follows cycles: The pieces that were considered popular 20 years ago now have chic, modern incarnations making the rounds today. Take the spread dedicated to the slouchy suit trend in the 1997 August issue of Vogue: Those same executive silhouettes were recently updated for the Fall 2017 runways. The same “history repeats itself” notion applies to accessories. Flipping to page 267 of that same issue, you’ll find a spread titled “10 Most Wanted Accessories.” (It also says, “Finish off fall’s gray flannel pantsuit with something (sort of) wild!”) There are tried-and-true classics, such as the knee-high boot, that have never quite gone away (though now, thanks to the Vetements effect, it’s more about crotch-grazing cuissardes). Another piece of note is the reptile ankle boot. 20 years later it comes in metallic blue, courtesy of Dries Van Noten, and more natural hues by way of Yeezy.

That said, there are more standout, peculiar duds that have experienced a recent resurgence. Take the seat-belt belt. The sturdy fastener first made a sleek utilitarian cameo at Gucci with a buckle in the shape of the label’s classic “G” emblem. Now, the piece is back and right in step with the recent workwear trend. Heron Preston has long been using the sturdy belt in his collections, taking the sky-high approach and morphing it into a cargo airplane belt with a pull-tab. Other designers have followed suit, as well: For Spring 2018 Men’s, Prada used the hyper-functional cincture for a double-belt styling moment.

One funny accessory that has had the occasional cameo are the “Look Like Bono” fluorescent yellow tinted wrap sunglasses. Though the sunnies have yet to make their noughties Ali G–style appearance, the pairs have been spotted in the quirky granny-themed Gucci Pre-Fall 2017 collection and as a bold statement to go with the tailored looks at Acne Men’s Fall 2017.
