Moschino's Pill-Themed Collection Gets Scrutinized

Moschino has come under fire for its pill-themed capsule collection, which debuted on Sept. 22 during Milan Fashion Week.

There's a change.org petition asking Saks Fifth Avenue remove the collection from its department stores, including a handbag shaped like a prescription bottle ($950), a backpack with colorful capsules ($695), and pill-printed dresses and sweaters ($650 to $795).

"Do you have any idea of the message your company is sending to those who have suffered the loss of a loved one due to a drug overdose?" wrote petition creator Randy Anderson, a recovery addict who works as an alcohol and drug counselor in Minneapolis, Minn.

However Moschino states that the company never intended to promote drug abuse. Instead it was a play on the word "capsule," which was made popular by Donna Karan in the 1980s by creating a "capsule wardrobe" that only featured the most essential pieces from a collection.

"The Moschino capsule collection was inspired by a play on the word 'capsule' translated literally as a collection of 'capsule-themed' products," said a spokesperson for the brand. "There was never any intent to promote prescription drug abuse. We are disheartened to hear that there has been a misunderstanding of the underlying theme of the collection."

The label's rep also noted that the range includes items that read "‘Just say MoschiNO," which references the "Just Say No" anti-drug campaign.

Jeremy Scott's Moschino collections are known for making provocative statements through its cheeky designs, which have featured Powerpuff Girls, McDonald's and Windex.

Saks did not immediately respond to The Hollywood Reporter's request for comment.

But according to CNN Money, Nordstrom has pulled the products after receiving "negative feedback from customers," a rep for the department store told the site. Nordstrom did not immediately respond to THR's request for additional comments.

Not surprisingly, the capsule collection is already a favorite among Scott's famous friends. Rihanna was seen carrying the prescription bottle-shaped iPhone case and Sofia Richie wore one of the tees covered with prescription drug labeling.
