My family bought me this Lenovo S41-35 when I first started college. It was intended as an entry-level laptop—just something to handle writing papers and putting together presentations. To my surprise, it stayed with me long after graduation, surviving two job changes and three moves. Even now, it still sits in the side pocket of my commuter bag as a backup device. After all these years, it remains far more intuitive and comfortable to use than many of the newer digital gadgets I’ve purchased since.
The first thing you notice is how light it is. Weighing just a little over three pounds, it’s easy to carry in my bag while rushing to catch the subway or heading to client meetings; even after a full day on the go, my shoulders never feel sore or strained. It’s thinner than the old dictionaries I used to own, so it doesn’t create an awkward, bulky bulge in my bag—none of the typical hassle that comes with lugging around a heavy, traditional laptop. I chose the "Starlight Silver" finish; even after all this time, the casing hasn’t yellowed, and the worn edges have developed a familiar, well-loved patina.
What surprised me most is the touchpad. I used to rely on an external mouse and never expected much from a built-in laptop trackpad, but this one has held up remarkably well. It’s responsive and firm, with a satisfying tactile click, and the edges are smooth and precise. Gestures like two-finger zooming for spreadsheets or three-finger swipes to switch desktops have become so natural that, in many cases, I find them even more efficient than using a mouse. Not long ago, I forgot my mouse while heading to a client meeting; I ended up editing a PowerPoint presentation for half an hour using only the touchpad, and it worked flawlessly—no lag, no accidental clicks, and no disruption to my work.
The battery life is also incredibly reliable. I often take it with me for an entire afternoon of meetings—opening documents, connecting to projectors, and running through proposals—and it consistently lasts over four hours on a full charge, so I’m never left hunting for a power outlet. On a recent short trip, I spent an afternoon on the balcony of my rental, editing a travelogue and browsing the web; by the time I finished, there was still plenty of battery left—I didn’t even need to take out the charger. Of course, it’s not without its minor flaws. When I first bought it, the pre-installed system would occasionally slow down if I had too many documents open; however, after I reinstalled the OS and cleared out unnecessary background software, it has run smoothly ever since. While the screen resolution isn’t particularly high by today’s standards for new laptops, it’s perfectly adequate for my daily tasks—mostly working with documents and spreadsheets—and it doesn’t cause any eye strain, even after long periods of use.
Many of my friends have urged me to upgrade to the latest thin-and-light laptop, pointing out that newer models offer better specifications and superior displays. Yet, after years of using various tech products, I’ve come to realize that a device that stays by your side—from your time on campus all the way into your professional career, reliably supporting you through every high-pressure moment like rushing to finish a proposal or heading out for field work—is far more than just a simple tool. This Lenovo S41-35 helped me complete my graduation thesis and saw me through countless late nights spent revising projects. That sense of dependable familiarity that comes with long-term use is something a brand-new device simply cannot easily replace.
