A new option coming to Pixel phones in Android 16 is the ability to use the fingerprint sensor when the screen is turned off.
In Android 16 DP2, Google is adding an option for “Screen-off fingerprint unlock.” This allows users to start using the fingerprint sensor even when the screen is entirely off. This was one of the only truly new features added in Android 16 Developer Preview 2, as other visible changes were primarily cosmetic.
Fingerprint scanners provide a handy and secure way to unlock your smartphone, but they aren’t always actively scanning for fingerprints. This is only really an issue with under-display fingerprint scanners, though, as oftentimes the screen needs to be woken first before the device activates the fingerprint scanner. Every Pixel phone with an under-display fingerprint scanner works like this, but fortunately, that won’t be the case for much longer, at least for the Google Pixel 9.
Fingerprint scanners have been a pain in the thumb to use ever since they stopped being a physical button and got jammed into the screen. Sure, they're handy (pun intended), but they aren't always accurate. Oftentimes, the screen needs to be woken up first before the device even activates the fingerprint scanner. Fortunately, Android 16 looks set to put an end to this, at least for Pixel devices.

Of course, this functionality has technically always existed for those using always-on display (AOD) settings, as the fingerprint sensor, even the optical ones, continues to be available whenever the time is being shown (which helps avoid the jarring light from optical sensors). This new option is primarily useful for those who are not using AOD.
Google released the second developer preview of Android 16 earlier today, and while digging through the update on my Pixel 9 Pro, I discovered a new setting called “Screen-off Fingerprint Unlock” under Settings > Security & privacy > Device unlock > Face & Fingerprint Unlock > Fingerprint Unlock. Its description says that you can “use Fingerprint Unlock even when the screen is off.”
The Pixel 9 introduced a new, faster fingerprint unlock function, called an ultrasonic fingerprint scanner. It addressed many of the complaints people have had about Android fingerprint unlocking, speed being one of them. The Pixel 9 unlocks so fast that there's barely time for your brain to register what happened. It has also become much more reliable and works on the first try...most of the time. But it still requires the screen to be activated first.
