Huawei has unveiled a new flagship phone boasting entirely homegrown software that aims to give users an alternative to Google’s Android or Apple’s iOS, in another effort by the Chinese tech giant to defend against possible further sanctions by Washington.
Huawei is set to launch its latest smartphone this week, complete with a new, made-in-China operating system — a first for a Chinese company and an indication of the progress the country’s tech companies have made, despite US sanctions.
In China, Huawei has this week unveiled the Mate 70 series and the Mate X6, it’s latest book-style foldable. The new smartphones bring plenty of hardware upgrades, including the use of a spectral imaging sensor on the Mate 70 Pro for improved color accuracy and shadows within photos. The Mate X6 has similar camera upgrades alongside better water resistance and improvements to the hinge.

From next year, all of Huawei’s new phones and tablet devices would run on its own operating system, he added.
The Mate 70 is the successor to last year’s Mate 60 series, which shocked industry experts who couldn’t understand how the company could have the technology to make an advanced chip following sweeping efforts by the United States to restrict China’s access to foreign semiconductor technology.
However, unlike many are saying, it sounds like the Huawei Mate 70 and Huawei Mate X6 won’t be ready for HarmonyOS Next right away. GSMArena points out that only “some” Mate X6 units will ship with HarmonyOS Next, while the Mate 70 won’t have it out of the box at all. Rather, both devices will be using the existing HarmonyOS 4.3, which is still based on Android. Updates to the new Android-free version will come in the future.
The first version of HarmonyOS, which supported Android-based applications, was launched in August 2019, months after Huawei was placed on a US trade blacklist that barred American firms from selling tech and software to the Chinese company without a license.
Huawei, notably, is quiet on some of the key specs of these devices, most notably the chipset, due to the ongoing US ban. However, it’s though that the devices are using the Kirin 9100 which is produced in China.
