The South Carolina Department of Corrections (SCDC) is currently developing an innovative approach to detect unauthorized cell phones within its prison system in Columbia, S.C. (WIS).

Thursday's announcement of a groundbreaking cellphone tracking experiment came in the wake of the arrest and subsequent charges against two SCDC officers involved in a substantial contraband seizure at the Broad River Correctional Institution on July 1st.

Alexis Simone Tucker, aged 27 and residing in Columbia, is facing a range of serious charges. These charges encompass trafficking methamphetamines weighing 400 grams or more, trafficking cocaine exceeding 200 grams, possession of marijuana with the intent to distribute, providing contraband to prisoners, misconduct in office, and involvement in a drug conspiracy.

The investigation revealed that Tucker had successfully introduced several packages of prohibited items into the prison by hiding them inside a work bag labeled with the SCDC insignia.

Jorge L. Romero Navarro, a 46-year-old resident of Columbia, is facing charges of misconduct in office and drug conspiracy.

Navarro was taken into custody in connection with Tucker because officials asserted that he turned a blind eye to Tucker's actions of bringing contraband into the prison.

As per the SCDC's statement, the total amount of contraband seized comprised 3,249 grams of marijuana, 1,485 grams of tobacco, 982 cigar wraps, 605 grams of methamphetamine, 217 grams of cocaine, 27 cellphones, chargers, game controllers, air pods, and various other illicit items.

SCDC Director Bryan Stirling emphasized the extensive surveillance system in place, with an abundance of cameras scattered throughout various locations. This vast network enables us to closely monitor and comprehend ongoing activities.

Stirling shared his disappointment with WIS, expressing his dismay over his staff's participation in criminal activities. However, the interception on Saturday served as a poignant reminder of the critical role cell phone jammer hold within state prisons.

Stirling emphasizes that signal jamming wifi has been a topic of significant debate at the national level for almost two decades. The primary purpose of this approach is to obstruct cellphone coverage within prisons, thereby thwarting inmates from participating in illegal activities facilitated by contraband phones.

In the United States, it is still against the law to employ technology that obstructs mobile calls, despite two decades of ongoing debate.

However, during this interim period, we were able to come to an agreement with the industry regarding the option to deactivate these phones. It is important to clarify that this is not signal jamming and it will not immediately shut down the phone. Instead, its purpose is to assist us in identifying the phones, as continued by Stirling.

This summer, SCDC is breaking new ground by becoming the first correctional system to implement a novel strategy for locating cell phones utilized by prisoners.

According to Stirling's explanation to WIS, the test will depend on mobile device identification to identify illegal calls made by prisoners from within the prison walls.

SCDC will gain the ability to remotely shut down the device by contacting the service provider once the mobile IDs have been intercepted.

Once the testing phase is concluded, our plan is to approach the FCC and present our operational product, seeking their endorsement. Subsequently, we will allocate the necessary funds to implement this solution across all correctional facilities. If our endeavors prove successful, we will then approach the legislature to emphasize the imperative nature of its widespread implementation.

As per the latest information, it is stated that cell phones are being sold for around $6,000 within the prison system.

Stirling's objective is to render a large number of phones inactive, thereby causing the price to skyrocket to unattainable heights.

In his concluding statement, Stirling highlighted the potential impact of turning off cell phones on crime rates. He believed that such a measure would lead to a significant decrease in criminal activities, both inside and outside prisons. Drug dealing, violence, and other related incidents would witness a notable slowdown. It is crucial to acknowledge that events occurring within the prison system often have repercussions that extend beyond its confines.

The SCDC is unable to provide information regarding the anticipated start or end time of the test.

According to officials, Tucker and Navarro were released after their time at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.
