While she may not have a real pulse, the latest sex dolls, also known as robotic partners, are very close to human: she (mostly female) has a body temperature of 98.6 degrees, so she's warm to touch; she moans when touched in sensitive areas; and she can even simulate an orgasm. She talks, and she adjusts her responses to her user - so if you don't like what she says, she can adjust to suit your needs and desires.<o:p></o:p>

She's not really a sex doll anymore. She's more like a sex robot, and she could have wide-ranging implications for the nature of relationships and sex work.<o:p></o:p>

"The old dolls didn't have any built-in sensors to move their heads, blink their eyes or move their lips on their own; the skin material was different and the skeleton material was different," said Mike Chanowski, director of sales for Green Earth Robotics Inc. a sex doll retailer based near Toronto. "Now, in 2019, we've made significant upgrades to the sensitive skin touch sensor and built-in heating system to heat the doll's body."<o:p></o:p>

Today's sex dolls are made of silicone or medical-grade thermoplastic elastomer, a material similar to rubber. Additional features for an extra charge include body temperature, touch sensors, breathing simulation and more, Charnofsky said. While he noted that consumers can choose from bold or shy personalities and different body types, as well as a range of skin, eye and hair colors, most of the dolls offered have light skin tones, skinny bodies and large breasts, similar to Barbie dolls.<o:p></o:p>

The AI-powered sex robots - which have been in development for years - were first introduced in 2017, but every few months a more developed doll (one that breathes or self-lubricates, for example) overtakes the previous version.<o:p></o:p>

Experts say consumers are willing to spend tens of thousands of dollars for sex dolls for a variety of reasons. The podcast "Two Girls One Mic: Porncast."<o:p></o:p>

Vaughn says there can be any number of toys or devices in a person's sexual toolbox, "and sex dolls are no exception. They will never replace human interaction, but will complement certain fantasies and behaviors that you can't otherwise create."<o:p></o:p>

Gina Covarrubias, a former sex worker, former adult website ad writer and owner of Provocateur West, a Las Vegas-based adult industry marketing firm, says some men have been victimized by their ex-partners. (While there are some male sex dolls, they are often used by men as well, Covarrubias says.) They see sex dolls as someone (or something) who won't betray them. covarrubias adds that others see sex dolls as their only female companion, or as a fetish they don't like to share with others.<o:p></o:p>

"A sex doll may be the perfect substitute for a man whose sadistic needs are something that most sex workers want to stay away from," Covarrubias said. They can choose dolls to suit their preferences, either a pretty young sex doll or a tasteful mature sex doll.<o:p></o:p>

While she says she's not worried that sex dolls will take a lot of business away from real-life sex workers (dolls are too expensive), she is concerned that artificial sex partners will promote violent sexual behavior.<o:p></o:p>

Covarrubias says that in the early 2000s, mainstream porn took an ugly turn and became more misogynistic and violent, with popular trends of pummeling someone's head (called donkey punching) and plugging women's noses.<o:p></o:p>

"Once that happened, it seeped into real life," Covarrubias said. "Once men are free to do whatever they want to do without real flesh-and-blood people objecting, real-life sexuality can get worse, too."<o:p></o:p>
