In recent years, the Do Not Disturb feature on both iPhones and Android devices has evolved. It’s no longer just a simple tool to block notifications and distractions but a customizable set of modes that you can tailor to different scenarios in your life, like driving, sleeping, working, or working out at the gym.

This allows you to have more control over which apps and contacts can interrupt you, and when. For instance, you can configure Slack to send you alerts during office hours, but prevent it from bothering you during family time, all with just a few taps.

Spending a few minutes setting up these modes to fit your needs and schedule is worth it. It helps reduce distractions while ensuring you don’t miss any important notifications.

The exact details of the Do Not Disturb feature may vary depending on the manufacturer, but if you’re using a Pixel 9 with Android 15 or a Galaxy S25 with One UI 7, the instructions below should apply. For other devices, the process should be similar. If you’re an iPhone user, you can explore Focus modes instead.

In older versions of Android, Do Not Disturb had its own category within the Settings app. However, starting from Android 15, you can find it by going to Settings > Modes.

In addition to the regular Do Not Disturb mode, there are preset modes for Bedtime and Driving. You’ll also find options for the Game Dashboard (which manages notifications and settings while gaming) and a link to Create Your Own Mode. (Note: if you’ve already modified Do Not Disturb or other modes, the presets might not appear — you can typically find them again in the Create Your Own Mode section.)

To create a custom mode, tap the Create Your Own Mode option, then select Custom. Here’s how you can set it up:

  1. Name your new mode and choose an icon for it.

  2. Tap Done to create the mode and open its configuration page.

  3. Select Set a schedule to have the mode turn on and off automatically. Alternatively, you can manually enable or disable it by tapping Turn on now and Turn off.

  4. Tap People to define which contacts are allowed to interrupt you. This applies to calls and messages through the default text messaging app, and you can have separate contact lists for each mode.

  5. Tap Apps to specify which apps can send notifications while the mode is active. You can select specific apps by tapping the gear icon next to Selected apps.

  6. Tap Alarms and other interruptions to control how alarms, media, reminders, keyboard sounds, and calendar events behave while the mode is on.

  7. There’s also a Display setting, where you can adjust how notifications are shown. You can choose whether they wake up the screen, appear in the status bar, or dim the screen. You can also enable grayscale or dark mode for the screen when the mode is active.

Once a mode is added to the list, you can tap it anytime to make changes, or manually enable or disable it. You can also rename or delete the mode by tapping the three dots in the top-right corner. Android’s preset Bedtime and Driving modes can also be edited or deleted if you prefer.

Keep in mind that you can combine these modes with app-specific settings. For example, you could allow WhatsApp notifications through the Do Not Disturb mode but mute specific chats inside WhatsApp so you only hear from certain people.

You can also launch your configured modes from the Quick Settings panel. Simply swipe down with two fingers from the top of the screen, and select Modes.

For Samsung Galaxy phones, similar options can be found by selecting Modes and Routines in the Settings app. Routines are automated actions you can set up on your Galaxy phone, like turning on the lights when you wake up, and these can be tied into modes if needed.

Both Modes and Routines are accessible via tabs at the bottom of the screen. In the Modes tab, Samsung provides several presets to get you started, such as Sleep, Exercise, and Work. To start building your own mode and explore the available options, tap Add mode.

You can choose a name, an icon, and a color for your mode.
Tap Done to confirm and create the mode, which will take you to the settings screen.
Tap When to start this mode to schedule when it should run. You can also manually activate it by tapping Turn on and deactivate it by tapping Turn off.
Select Ways to avoid distractions to fine-tune the mode's settings in more detail.
Under the Do Not Disturb section, you can specify which contacts can trigger alerts through calls and messages (using the default text messaging app), and which apps are allowed to send notifications.
The Restrict app usage option allows you to block certain apps while the mode is active.
Back on the settings screen, you’ll find the More actions section, where you can further customize the mode. This includes options for turning the display gray, enabling dark mode, controlling volume, and activating power-saving features. Additionally, there are options to change the Lock screen and Home screen backgrounds, allowing you to set different wallpapers when the mode is on.

You can tap on any mode in the main list to edit it at any time. If you want to rename a mode, just tap its name, and tap the three dots in the top-right corner to delete it or adjust how long the mode should stay active when manually enabled.

As with Pixel phones, remember that individual apps also have their own notification settings. For example, in Gmail, you can choose to only receive alerts for high-priority emails instead of every email in your inbox.

Finally, in addition to enabling modes from the Modes and Routines screen or on a schedule, you can find and activate them from the Quick Settings panel. Swipe down from the top right of the screen, and select Modes.
