In addition to infuriating a lot of its Western-based fans, Samsung's recent Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition release in South Korea and China has sparked a very important debate for foldable users around the world. The question on many people's minds right now is whether next year's Galaxy Z Fold 7 should retain its predecessor's S Pen support or ditch that in favor of the Z Fold SE's wasp waist.

Samsung could be planning some substantial changes for the Galaxy Z Fold 7, both to the device itself and the S Pen you can use with it.
This is according to a report on ET News (via @Jukanlosreve), which states that Samsung is considering a different type of technology for the S Pen – one that doesn’t require a digitizer.
According to a report from ETNews, Samsung is planning to switch from its current use of an electromagnetic resonance (EMR) digitizer under the display to an active electrostatic (AES) tech. With both, electricity is used to create the precise input of the stylus, but with EMR, it’s done through the display assembly. As such, the device has to have another layer which, in turn, makes it thicker.
If the "multiple industry insiders" quoted in the latest ETNews report (translated here) are correct, Samsung is "seriously considering" switching from the current EMR technology of the Galaxy Z Fold 6-compatible S Pen to the AES standard used on the Apple Pencil (among others) for the company's next-gen foldable-supporting stylus.
According to this report, though, Samsung could switch to an Apple Pencil-like technology for the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7’s S Pen, which would allow it to work without a digitizer. The benefits here are obvious – the phone could be slimmer while still allowing you to use a stylus. In theory, this should work out well. Samsung doesn’t build the stylus directly into the Fold series, so there’s no concern with having to find a way to charge the stylus when its stowed away. However, it also comes with the downside that the stylus is now another thing the user has to charge. But this change comes with benefits, including apparently switching to a titanium backplate behind the display rather than the current carbon fiber which was used to avoid interference with the digitizer.
