Where would you take us on a research trip to Taiwan if you had the opportunity?
Taipei, Taiwan's dynamic northern metropolis, has developed a highly convenient public transportation infrastructure that is now complemented by many shared micromobility options. We'd utilise them to explore Taipei's back lanes and uncover the city's myriad culinary options. After that, we'd go to Kaohsiung on a sleek high-speed train.
The relaxed, roomy, and friendly port city in the south is a welcome break from the bustling metropolis. The city has been changing from an industrial powerhouse to a tourism attraction with a cool industrial legacy in recent years. The first tram line on the island was established in Kaohsiung, and it is being expanded into a circle route with five e-moped sharing operators to select from.
The research trip concludes with an exploration of Taiwan's tour bike rental system. These are available at GIANT stores across the island, which has played a key part in the recent cycling boom. We'd first go to the magnificent east coast on a narrow-gauge Japanese vintage railway. We'd rent bikes in Taitung and cycle 200 kilometres to Hualian along the Pacific coast and across the East Rift Valley's rice terraces. While on the way, we can enjoy some Oolong tea while admiring the scenery and rest our tired legs in one of the island's many hot springs.
