ONCE a purely functional wardrobe item, trainers now come in all kinds of stylish patterns and designs. In fact, they can be worn with just about anything.

“It’s about creating a casual, relaxed look,” explains Ulrike Kaehler from Germany’s Gallery Shoes footwear trade fair.

One interesting element in the evolution of trainers is what’s been happening with the soles. They’re becoming thicker all the time, experts say, and are often now a design element in their own right.

“Lightness and brightness are a must when it comes to thick soles,” says Claudia Schulz from the Association of the German Footwear and Leather Goods Industry.

However, in spite of all the options on offer – or perhaps because of them – classic white trainers remain as popular as ever. They’re ideal for people who like a sporty look with a touch of elegance, the experts say. Mid-blue shades and olive are also on trend.

Extra-lightweight trainers are also popular – and extremely comfortable. High-tech materials like Lurex and elastic textiles help keep the weight down, and produce an eye-catching visual effect as well.

A more casual look can be achieved through tennis-style shoes in canvas or nappa leather. They create a fresh, youthful appearance.
