Office polish: lessons in work wear dressing from Bassike’s communications manager

An assured personal style often means a strong sense of self and an awareness of what works and what brings out one’s best. But Jacqueline Perrett, Bassike’s communication manager and a mother of two, puts her style down to something else. “I am the ultimate in lazy dressing,” she says with a laugh over the phone from Bassike’s northern beaches’ headquarters, downplaying a signature look that has become renowned in the Australian fashion industry: restrained in colour with relaxed pieces made from natural fibres.

Perrett has an easy Australian-ised elegance, visual taste and lifestyle that’s fitting for her job, a leaning she credits in part to her mother, who ran a fashion boutique in Mosman when she was growing up.“My style is deliberately consistent. There has always been a tomboy element to the way I dress,” she says of her penchant for mostly neutrals and chic variations of white.

Having recently chopped her long hair into a bob, she has had to adapt her morning routine. “I need to make sure I look polished in terms of hair and make-up. With shorter hair I have put more care into how I look.”

Bassike has been an easy fit for Perrett’s sartorial persuasion. And although after six years with the brand her style has remained the same, the label’s philosophy has influenced how she pulls her wardrobe together. “Now I buy pieces with longevity that are better made, better quality and with better fabrication,” she says.
