Nadiya had an arranged marriage to husband Abdal when she was 19, but got her happy ending as the couple have gone on to enjoy a successful marriage

Great British Bake Off winner Nadiya Hussain says the day she got married was “one of the worst days of her life”.

Over fourteen million people saw her crowned champion last year and the 31-year-old is now the subject of a new two-part BBC documentary The Chronicles of Nadiya.

In it she returns to Bangladesh for the first time in 11 years where many of her relatives still live and also has an emotional reaction to being a guest at the wedding of her distant cousin, Jasmine.

Nadiya, who had an arranged marriage to husband Abdal when she was 19, said: “I have to say my wedding day was one of the worst days of my life. One of the unspoken rules is as a bride you have to behave submissively and look downcast.

"I was an emotional wreck and I cried through the whole thing. I didn’t smile very much. You are literally on show and it’s something I was always really uncomfortable with. The bride will often keep her head down. I never really understood it.

“It’s bizarre a bride is unhappy on her wedding day, when really she should be happy.”

Her marriage at least had a happy ending as her and Abdal did get on well and have gone on to enjoy a successful marriage.

But vowing to act differently with her own three children, she added: “If I was the person I am now, I certainly would not have gone into a contract. I wouldn’t take out a mortgage contract without knowing how much money I am putting in and what my mortgage is, so why would I sign a marriage contract where I don’t know what I am getting myself into?

“I want something different for my children. I wouldn’t dream of arranging a marriage.”

Inviting the TV cameras into her home she shares with Abdal and their children, there are many intimate moments during the documentary including a big family get together.

But despite wowing millions with her cooking skills from scratch, the mum of three is not unwillingly to cut corners in the kitchen at times. She is seen using frozen oven chips and also showing how to make buttery, flaky Asian flatbread from frozen, bought-in puff pastry.

“I don’t do any of the hard work,” she said in the doc smiling. “I just buy a packet of frozen puff pastry and then pull bits from it. You then get flaky flatbreads without any of the hard work.”

Nadiya chats passionately about her decision to first start wearing a Hijab at the age of 14 as she shops with another relative.

Incredibly proud of how own upbringing and culture, she explained: “My religious beliefs also have an impact on what I wear. You have to make sure the sleeves are long, and then you have a scarf to go with it (dress). I have been wearing my Hijab since I was 14.

“It’s not specifically because I came from a religious family, I think I came from quite the opposite. It was something I found and the first part of me finding religion. It was the first act I actually did - to cover my hair. I realised the importance and significance. It’s a sign of being a Muslim, a sign of practicing Islam, it’s a sign of modesty, it’s just one of those things you do. Everyone finds it at different stages in your life. It’s seen as something beautiful.

“The only people who see your hair are the people you can’t marry apart from the person you do marry. So your husband, your dad, your dads’ brothers and your mums’ brothers, nieces and nephews and your own brothers. And granddad.”

Reflecting on life today as a practising Muslim, Nadiya reveals she will never stop wearing a Hijab as she admits: “There is a fear of ‘omg I am wearing something that everyone is going to look at’ and we blame you and that fear of being chastised or being criticised, or being blamed for something we are not responsible for. It strengthens my belief in who I am and the choices I make.”

The Chronicles of Nadiya, made by Love Productions, starts on BBC1 on August 24 at 9pm, directly after the first episode of the new series of The Great British Bake Off.
