Surface modification through thin coatings can significantly improve the performance and durability of anode materials. By depositing a layer of stable, lithium-reactive material (e.g., lithium oxide, carbon, or polymers) onto the surface of the anode, one can protect the underlying material from direct contact with the electrolyte, reducing side reactions and improving interfacial stability. These coatings also act as artificial solid-electrolyte interphases (SEIs), facilitating lithium ion transport and minimizing the initial irreversible capacity loss.
