Sony’s PlayStation 2 was a lightning strike, shifting 157 million units in 2000 and topping the charts. It became the best-selling gaming console of all time and set the standard for video games. It was the launch platform for mainstream blockbusters such as Grand Theft Auto and Metal Gear Solid, but also hosted some of the most unique and idiosyncratic titles in video game history: Katamari Damacy, Okami and Singstar to name just a few. If you want a powerful machine that can play the latest blockbusters, look no further than the PlayStation 5. Its 825 GB SSD (Solid-State Drive) means it can start up and load games faster than any previous Sony console. Xbox Its game library is excellent too, with stunning titles like Forza Horizon 5, Microsoft Flight Simulator and heavy-hitters Halo Infinite proving that it has the capacity to please a wide range of gamers. Alternatively, if you prefer to be more laid back and enjoy classic gaming then the Nintendo Switch is the ideal option. The Xbox is a bit underrated but is an exceptional piece of kit that was ahead of its time in every way. Its online gaming services were the first to really take off and it had some of the best games ever made. When it comes to the games themselves, I don’t think there’s a lot that can beat the Xbox 360 and its fantastic selection of first-person shooters, racing titles and simulation titles. It’s the perfect console for those who like to relive the thrill of their favourite games and it has the ability to host some of the most immersive multiplayer experiences thanks to innovations such as Achievements. While it has a reputation as being slightly unreliable and prone to outright hacking, the Xbox One was a great console that introduced us to some of the best titles of the modern era. Featuring beautiful HDR versions of Witcher 3, Assassin’s Creed Origins and Fallout 4, it was also the home of the Xbox Live service that turned online gaming into a global community of competitive gamers. Despite its rocky beginnings, the PlayStation 3 was a superb console that introduced users to the concept of cloud storage and video streaming and put social interaction at the heart of games. Its games library was packed with quality and it even pioneered the use of Blu-ray discs as a primary storage medium. Its game library is still incredibly strong and it offers some of the best value out there with its Game Pass subscription offering access to hundreds of exclusive titles from a variety of genres.
